The Social Views Of Women, Slavery, Farming And Trading

During the seventeenth century there was a large amount of change occurring in America. Much of this change included political, social, religious and economic issues throughout colonial America. These issues led to social tension and economic growth. During this time there was also controversy in Massachusetts that dealt with witchcraft. Although, much change was occurring at this time, both bad and good, white newcomers were gaining the benefits of this growth throughout the North and South lands. In this essay I will explain the social views of women, slavery, farming and trading, changes in the religious world and the witchcraft trials. This essay will provide a better understanding of the growth and change America went through†¦show more content†¦Puritans, viewed the scripture in the bible very highly, and deemed it as the only true law of God. â€Å"Puritans believed that each individual, as well as each congregation, was directly responsible to God, rather than answ ering through a mediator such as a priest, bishop, etc (What is Puritanism and what did the Puritans believe?) Puritan families followed the belief that men were the authority, and women were inferior to the men. Women born into these religious families were expected to be modest and obedient. Prudence, Chasity and Comfort were some of the popular names given to girls born during this time, expecting them to follow their religious beliefs. The seventeenth century was a time when economy was starting to flourish. With all the resources found in the New World, and many laws created, there was much work to be done. The growth of this land led more and more people to travel to it. Some people at this time would hire indentured servants to help with house chores and take care of the farms. Being an indentured servant meant that a deal was made with the owner of the land to bring the person over to America for about four to five years. In return the land owner would be their master. The servants were given a passage into America, food and shelter. They were also promised that after their time was up they would be able to own their own farms,
